  20. Welcome to the Bars&Pipes Professional 2.5 Demo!
  21.  
  22.     Bars&Pipes Professional 2.5, with multi-media support,
  23. is the Amiga sequencer of choice for composing, playing back,
  24. and syncing music to animations, slide shows, the Video Toaster
  25. (tm), and various other third party software and hardware.
  26.     Obviously, B&P Pro is a big program. It would be
  27. impossible to include the contents of the 370+ pages manual
  28. with this demo. We will try to point out some of the basic
  29. features, but much of the exploration is left up to you.
  30. Experiment! This demo incorporates most of the features of the
  31. real program, with the exceptions of saving and printing.

  35. Getting Started
  36.     Double-click on the Bars&Pipes Professional icon.
  37. You will need a MIDI interface attached to your serial port,
  38. or the One-Stop Music Shop soundcard.
  39.     B&P Pro starts with the Tracks window open so that you
  40. can begin recording immediately.  Most windows can be opened by
  41. selecting their title from the Windows menu or by clicking on
  42. the their icons located at the right side of the screen.
  43.  
  44.     1)  If using MIDI, test whether or not you've
  45. implemented MIDI properly. To test MIDI, do the following:
  46.     Make sure that the Input Arrow (a red arrow) points to
  47. the MIDI In Tool on Track 1 by clicking on the gray box to the
  48. right of the words "Track 1."
  49.     Make sure that your sound module or MIDI keyboard
  50. receives on MIDI channel 1.  If not, change the Output channel,
  51. the blue number on the far right side of a Track, to the
  52. correct number by clicking on it and moving the mouse to the
  53. appropriate channel. Also, if your keyboard supports local
  54. on/off, turn the local to off.
  55.     Play a note with your MIDI input device - typically a
  56. keyboard. If a note sounds, then you're ready to try out the
  57. demo.  If you hear nothing, check your MIDI set-up to ensure
  58. that you've connected things correctly.
  59.  
  60. The Metronome
  61.  
  62.     2) Set up the Metronome so that you can hear the beat
  63. as you record.  To access the metronome, select Metronome from
  64. the windows menu.  The Metronome window opens.  Let's use the
  65. Amiga's internal sounds as our click source.  Notice that the
  66. Internal button is already depressed.  (In general, if a button
  67. contains red type, it is active; if it contains blue type, then
  68. it is inactive.)
  69.     3) Change the click resolution from 1/4, or 4 clicks
  70. per measure in 4/4 time, to 1/8, or 8 clicks per measure.  To
  71. do so, click on the Note button and select an eighth note from
  72. the pop-up menu.
  73.     4)  Adjust the Lead In: slider to provide two measures
  74. of beats before B&P Pro starts to record.  Use the arrows or
  75. move the slider so that the number "2" displays.
  76.     5)  Test the Metronome.  To do so, click on the Start
  77. Button at the top of the Tracks window (the square and
  78. triangle).  If your Amiga's internal sounds capability is
  79. enabled, you'll hear the metronome.  The metronome conveniently
  80. clicks in three different ways: loudest on the first beat of
  81. each measure, softer and lower in pitch on each beat within the
  82. measure and even softer still on each subdivision of the beat.
  83. We designed this feature to enable you to "feel" the beat.  To
  84. stop the metronome, click on the Stop Button (the solid
  85. rectangle).
  86.     6)  Close the Metronome window by clicking on the
  87. "close window" button on the top left side of the window's
  88. title bar.

  90. Tempo
  91.  
  92.     7)  Set the tempo.  By default, B&P Pro sets the tempo
  93. at 120 beats per minute.  In order to change it, click on the
  94. Tempo Display, located on the upper half of the Track window,
  95. with the mouse.  Drag the mouse up to raise the tempo, and down
  96. to lower it. To select a tempo, do the following: Click on the
  97. Start button (or press the 0 key on the Amiga's keypad.)
  98. Immediately, you'll hear the internal metronome. (If you don't
  99. hear it, make sure that the internal sounds capability is
  100. enabled on your Amiga, your monitor has speakers, and the
  101. volume is up.)  With the metronome clicking, use the mouse to
  102. find a tempo to your liking.
  103.  
  104. Recording
  105.  
  106.     8)  Put Track 1 in Record mode. Do this by clicking on
  107. the "P" button once, which causes it to display an "R."   Make
  108. sure that the Input Arrow points to Track 1.
  109.     9)  Click on the "R" button at the upper right of the
  110. Tracks window.  This places the Sequencer into Record mode.
  111. You're now ready to record.
  112.     10)  Press the Start button to begin the metronome Lead
  113. In. After two measures, B&P Pro will begin recording.
  114.     11)  Play a few measures of music, then click with the
  115. mouse on the Stop button (the red square in the upper right of
  116. the Tracks window) to stop the recording process.  Once you've
  117. recorded a few notes, B&P Pro displays them as small dots in
  118. the Sequence Display.  (If the Track is highlighted, the dots
  119. are blue.  If not, the dots are yellow.)
  120.     12)  Press the Start button to hear your recording and
  121. the Stop button to stop playback.
  122.  
  123. Tools
  124.  
  125.     13)  Open the ToolBox.  Do so by double-clicking on the
  126. ToolBox icon, a hammer, located on the right side of the screen.
  127.     14)  Get the Echo Tool.  Do this in one of two ways:
  128.     Click on the "?" button in the ToolBox and select Echo
  129. from the scrolling pop-up menu.
  130.     Find the Echo Tool icon among the other Tools in the
  131. ToolBox, click the mouse button down, and hold it.
  132.     15)  Drag the Echo Tool to Track 1's Output PipeLine,
  133. located to the right of Track 1's Sequence Display.  To drag
  134. this Tool, hold it with the mouse while moving the mouse over
  135. to Track 1's Output PipeLine.  Lift up with the mouse once
  136. you've reached your destination.
  137.     16)  Open the Echo Tool's Control window.  To do so,
  138. double-click on the Echo Tool in the PipeLine.
  139.     17)  Change the Echo Tool's delay to "000.00.96" by
  140. moving the Delay: prompt slider to the left or right until the
  141. number "000.00.96" appears in the display.
  142.     18)  Change the Echo Tool's repeat to "1."  Do so by
  143. dragging the Repeat: prompt's slider until the number "1"
  144. appears in the display.
  145.     19)  If you like, close the Echo Tool's Control window
  146. or drag it to another location.
  147.     20)  Click on the Start button to hear the effect of
  148. the Echo Tool on your pre-recorded Track.  Notice that, even
  149. though nothing has changed in the Sequence Display, your Track
  150. now plays back with an echo effect.
  151.     21)  Move a copy of Track 1's Echo Tool to Track 2's
  152. Input PipeLine.  To do so, click down on Track 1's Echo Tool
  153. with the mouse and drag it to Track 2's Input PipeLine.
  154.     22)  Rename Track 2.  Do this by double-clicking on the
  155. words "Track 2," deleting the words "Track 2" from the Name:
  156. prompt and entering a new name.  You may also enter something
  157. in the Notes: prompt.  Once you've entered a new name, click on
  158. Okay to accept your changes.
  159.     23)  Move the Input arrow to Track 2.  Do so by
  160. clicking on the gray box to the right of "Track 2."
  161.     24)  Record on Track 2.  (Follow the same instructions
  162. as in steps 8 through 11.)  Notice that this time, the notes
  163. you play pass through the Echo Tool and into the Sequence
  164. Display.  The Sequence Display actually shows the echo
  165. graphically.  Tools placed on the Input PipeLine affect notes
  166. upon recording. Tools placed on the Output PipeLine effect
  167. notes upon playback only.
  168.     25)  Remove the Echo Tool in Track 1's Output PipeLine.
  169. To do so,  click on the Tool with the mouse, then press the
  170. Delete key on your Amiga keyboard.
  171.  
  172. Basic Editing
  173.  
  174.     26)  Open Track 1's Edit window.  You can do this in
  175. two ways:
  176.     Double-click on Track 1's Sequence Display.
  177.     Click once on Track 1's Sequence Display, then press
  178. the Return key on your Amiga keyboard.
  179.     27)  Use the Expansion Gadget to expand the Sequence
  180. Editor window.  Do this by clicking on the gray triangle on the
  181. Sequence E
